When I'm not Writing or Travelling, I'm Helping Others...

Articles and Photos for Magazines & Websites

An obvious way to subsidise my love of travel is to write articles for magazines, newspapers and websites. I can easily transfer my skills and experience as a writer of guidebooks into writing shorter articles - and provide high-quality, digital photographs to accompany them. My collection of photos can be viewed on Flickr. (Click on 'Sets'.)

Recently, my articles about Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia have been published by two Australian-based publications: Active Retirees and Senior Traveller. I also had articles printed for the:

While working in Jakarta for a company that develops international curricula, I became skilled at proof-reading, often finding mistakes in documents and books that had been used and read by students and teachers for years. More recently, I checked and proof-read The People Smuggler by an Australian author, Robin de Crespigny.

It is amazing how many times a writer (including myself) can draft, read, edit and redraft their work again and again, but not pick up simple mistakes in spelling and punctuation, as well as inconsistencies in plots and inaccuracies in descriptions. Don't let this happen to you.

During 2013, I ghost-wrote a non-fiction book, The Hard Way Home, for Allan Roberts about his travels across the world on a motorbike for nearly three years. It was published in early 2014 by JoJo Publishing (Melbourne).

Allan had this to say about my services:
Paul took on my project and turned a great story into a great read. His invaluable years of experience helped me get my book off the ground and headed in the right direction, something that I could not have done myself. And he continues to share ideas and provide support beyond the writing stage.

I can also share my skills, experience and knowledge as an editor for any article, book or form of writing.

Speaking & Workshops

As a teacher, I am comfortable speaking to an audience, and as an experienced writer I have plenty to offer.

Some possible topics include:

I conducted workshops in Travel Writing for the SA Writers Centre in 2012, 2013 and 2014. Comments from the organiser:
" .. your workshop received absolutely outstanding feedback. Thank you so much for delivering such a high quality workshop for our writers."

and the participants:

"I learnt a lot from you sharing your experiences ...." Fiona

"I really enjoyed it ... It is great to get tips from someone who knows the game so well." Jane Turner Goldsmith

For details about current and past speaking events, please refer to the News & Events page.

Because I love my job (no, really I do) and money is not a major motivation, my fees for writing tasks are about 1/3 of those charged by other professional editors, writers and proof-readers:
$25 per hour
$175 per day (8-9 hours)
$750 per week (5 days)

Fees for speaking engagements are negotiable for events where attendees pay; for social clubs, I am happy to speak for free.

Feel free to contact me anytime for any reason.
